Virgin Islands Fishing Trips at Their Best
The most exciting thing about sport fishing is you never know when you will hear "fish on!" ...the next thing you know you have a double header on... it's always nice to catch a mixed bag when the Wahoo and dolphin are running at the same time, or get that yellow fin tuna and a Wahoo or two... mixed with a Sailfish or Blue Marlin... other than that it would take a Grand Slam to top off that day... that's when you've had a truly exciting sport fishing adventure!
When is the best time to fish in the Virgin Islands?
Every day is a good day fishing in the Virgin Islands!
The weather around the Virgin Islands is pretty consistent – beautiful and warm. Tropical weather keeps our islands green, and during the summer and fall months the winds and water can be pretty calm. And with all of the fancy new advanced weather, we know well in advance of tropical disturbances, and only fish when it is safe to go out.
Blue Marlin Season is May - October, with each month growing progressively more active. But the size of the fish is normally bigger in the earlier months, so it just depends on what you want to catch.
The big blues are attracted to the full moons and you have a prime bite window around the moon, and overall we usually see the bigger fish early May/June then in July/August the majority are a little bit smaller (this is when big tournaments occur), but September in the past few years has broken some statistics reports and by far is even better, and October normally sees the most bites in any given day.
Our World Renowned fishing tournaments are during this time - the Annual Billfish Tournament is always the three days prior to the July moon, and the ABMT Atlantic Blue Marlin Tournament is always during and around August moon.
Seasons and Marlin Fishing - Full Moon
November - March: Wahoo fishing is especially good during this time, but there are lots of fish during these months, from blackfin and yellowfin tuna to dolphin, sailfish, barracuda, rainbow runners and even jacks – they are all here!
April – May brings out the "mixed bag" offshore, and with Spring in the air, huge schools of dolphin, and maybe even a white marlin or Sailfish can be on the hook. Don't forget that early bird Blue that might be wondering around!
June - October is our favorite time which is Blue Marlin Season that is when the Blues migrate to the Famous North Drop which is the Puerto Rican Trench the deepest point is approximately 28,000 feet. We start the hunt for the big blues around the May full moon and early in the season you will normally see average 400-500 pounders. Of course there is always a chance of those granders plus and that is why St. Thomas, Virgin Islands and BVI's is well known for Blue Marlin Fishing and holds several World Records.
